I'm sure you will have noticed that there has been no activity on this site for over a year now. In that time we have stayed and worked in Alice Springs again, and most of the things we did were the same as the previous year. Now we are making preparations to move, so this seems a good time to continue updating.

Our site at the Shelly Beach Caravan Park was really nice. The park is on the land side of a high sand dune that keeps the wind away from the sites.
Over the sand dune is Shelly Beach, named for all the shells that cover the sand.

All weekend we'd been contacting people we knew around the country trying to find out where there was reasonable work available. Sunday night we heard that there was plenty of work in Ceduna working at grain storage on the wharf.
First thing Monday I rang the recruiter for the job and was told there would be work there for us,

We left Tennant Creek early Sunday morning.
This time we bypassed the Devils Marbles and stopped at Bonney Well instead. There's not much left to see, but it is a good rest site.

We left Katherine before 8am this morning, heading South with Alice Springs as a possible destination.
Mataranka was our first stop to pick up some travel lollies from the shop.

The information on our job at Katherine finally came through on Monday, so Tuesday we moved down to Katherine to be ready to start the next Monday.
Originally we were going to stay at a park out of town, but some friends whe were going to the same job were staying in town, and we decided to go to the same park.

From our Daly Waters camp, we made straight for Darwin and were set up in the Coolalinga Caravan Park on Wednesday night. The park was actualy full since the wet had started very early this year. In fact it had just poured before we arrived.

Tuesday, 5th October, 2010
Most of today we were driving on the Barkley Tableland. It was not very interesting, just flat land with miserable looking scrub.
The turnoff to the old Newcastle Waters township came up and we decided to have a look this time rather than just drive past.

We were pretty close to the Devils Marbles, so after packing up at daylight after a very quiet night, we continued up the road toward the big stones.

There is nothing like the sight of termite mounds to bring on feelings of being home, and we were quite surprised today to see them quite close to Alice.
We left around 8.30am and started heading North.

That's my compacting goats-foot roller - Mr Stampy - working on one side of the road in front of Alice Springs showgrounds on a beautiful Spring morning.
We've been backfilling a trench dug under the road for the new power mains into town. One of my jobs on this site has been to compact the fill very well, and when Mr Stampy gets into full vibration, the earth really does tremble.
I've been making some major changes to this web site involving rewriting all the past material. Until this project is complete, there will be a mix of old and new style pages, but all material is still present.
