Our 2010 stay in Alice Springs - fourth page - Henly on Todd.
Saturday, 21st August 2010
I had arranged to have today off as we were going to the Henly-on-Todd regatta.
Yesterday was windy and cold, but today the weather was great for the event. Bright blue sky and nice and warm.
We paid our $12 each and entered the arena. The first thing that struck us was the lack of stalls. We expected heaps of stalls selling food and nic-nacs, but there was just a handfull.
Around the main arena was covered seating - if you could get a spot. We started standing in the shade of a tree and watched the sand skiing where a team of four shuffle around the course on two boards.
We then walked around the side of the arena and found our friends from the Hall of Fame on one of the grandstands. There was room alongside them for us, so we ended up with a bit of comfort.
The bath tub derby was where a team of four carried a bath tub with a person inside up the course, then threw a bucket of water in the tub and carried it back.
Then a sail boat race where the team picked up their boat and raced around the course.
There was a constant stream of events on two parts of the arena. There was always something happening. Here is the sand board surfing using spades and a trolly.
We left mid afternoon, missing the finale where three battle boats fight for supremacy using flour and water bombs and water cannon.
It was due to start at 4.30, and had we known this we would not have come so early. Something to remember if we ever return.
All in all it was a very good show.

We had not expected this day to come quite so soon, but as of today, we are both Alice Springs 'locals'.
Friday it rained very heavily to the north of the city, and the Todd River started flowing again, so now we have seen it flowing for the third time - Locals!
